The home row: where typing starts
The middle row of letters — A S D F G H J K L ; — is home base. Your fingers rest here and return here after every single keystroke.
The anchor keys: F and J
Feel your keyboard: F and J have small raised bumps. Your index fingers sit on them without looking — that is the whole trick of touch typing. From there each finger owns one key: left hand A (pinky), S (ring), D (middle), F (index), and the right hand mirrors it with J (index), K (middle), L (ring), ; (pinky). The index fingers also stretch one key inward for G and H.
The five home-row lessons
- Lesson 1 — F and J: just your index fingers.
- Lesson 2 — D and K: middle fingers join.
- Lesson 3 — S and L: ring fingers.
- Lesson 4 — A and ;: pinkies complete the row.
- Lesson 5 — G and H + review: inward stretches and real home-row words like "glad", "fall" and "shall".
